Manganese

A trace mineral that supports bone formation, metabolism, and one of the body's main antioxidant enzymes. Deficiency is rare, and most people get enough from food.

Commonly used for

  • Bone health, as part of bone formulas
  • Joint and connective tissue formulas
  • Rounding out a multivitamin

Found naturally in

  • Whole grains and oats
  • Nuts
  • Beans and lentils
  • Tea
  • Pineapple

Label red flags

  • Joint formulas that add a lot of manganese, especially when combined with a multi
  • A standalone manganese product without a clear reason

Check with a provider

  • Liver disease. Manganese is cleared through bile and can build up.
  • Long-term excess has been linked to nerve and movement problems
  • Iron deficiency, which increases how much manganese you absorb
  • Taking certain antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones). Separate doses.
