Copper

A trace mineral needed for red blood cells, iron use, collagen, and nerve health. It works in balance with zinc, so taking one affects the other.

Commonly used for

  • Balancing long-term zinc use
  • Copper deficiency on lab testing
  • After bariatric surgery (as directed)
  • Anemia linked to low copper

Found naturally in

  • Oysters and shellfish
  • Liver
  • Cashews and sesame seeds
  • Dark chocolate
  • Lentils

Label red flags

  • Long-term zinc without any copper
  • A standalone copper product on top of a multi that already has copper, without lab work

Check with a provider

  • Wilson's disease or other copper-storage problems
  • Liver disease
  • Zinc-copper balance. High zinc over time lowers copper, and copper without enough zinc can tip the balance the other way. Testing helps.
  • Signs of too much: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or a metallic taste
